Someone Else Might Want Them

I do understand why I like some styles of music, and not others. Sure, I can tell you that I prefer live music over studio because I feel the energy and passion comes through more effectively. OK, but why do is the energy so important to me?

Some music is popular with other people, yet not with me. Here are a four albums that I do not care for. They are now at Reverberation Vinyl for people who do like them.


Pink Floyd, "The Wall." To me, this continued the overblown themes that bored me.
Ornette Coleman, "Dancing In Your Head." Nope. To me, it is 2 sides of noise.
Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here." Nope, I found it boring when it was released. Still do.
John Coltrane, "Meditations." I am a jazz fan, and like many of Coltrane's albums. Not this one. Noise.

Someone Else Might Want Them

The revival of the vinyl LP is a very interesting phenomenon. I am not sure why people who did not grow up with the LP being the only option for music ,are now buying LPs. I'm sure happy about it - it has created a large market in used LPs. Now I have somewhere (Reverberation Vinyl for me) to take the albums I don't listen to anymore, and swap them for ones I want.

I started listening to my albums that I have not touched in maybe 35 years, to weed out the ones I still liked and the ones that need to be "recycled."

It is an interesting voyage through memories, listening to these past favorites. I recalled places and people I have not thought of in years. Nostalgia.

Well, here are some examples of albums I decided to keep.


A Few Interesting Oldest Keepers

One of the first albums I played was Traffic's "The Low Spark of High heeled Boys." Such a unique sounding album. Is it blues or rock or jazz or what?
I still like it.
The first Black Sabbath album. You know, it is pretty good. Plus, the memories attached to it just makes it a keeper.
Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a keeper because it is still enjoyable as long as you grasp the creepy, weird, psychodelic, electronic sound of the middle 1960s.

The Rolling Stones "Beggar's Banquet"

In 1975, at 19 years old, my buddy since elementary school invited me and 3 other old friends to go with him to see The Rolling Stones in Milwaukee. 

I was familiar with the band's singles, and the album "Sticky Fingers," but that was all. For reasons I do not know, there were no big Stones fans in my immediate group of friends who played their albums. By the way, albums were the primary format we had for music. Playing single songs would require 45 records, and a record player that could stack maybe 10 records - that was not viable.

This concert was like nothing I had attended before, not that I had gone to many up to this point in my life. It was HUGE! Tremendous opening acts (multiple). All I can tell you is, there is nothing as big and exciting as a Rolling Stones concert.

After this show, I became a big fan. Now I wanted their records. By 1975, The Rolling Stones had already been around for quite a while with many albums, so where do I start? I read reviews from various sources to find out what is viewed as essential albums to have. One that was repeatedly listed was "Beggar's Banquet," so I purchased it.

It was not what I expected. Their hit singles on the radio, then the album "Sticky Fingers," were electric rock oriented. Beggar's Banquet had more blues and acoustic instruments. I liked it, kept playing it, and it grew to be my favorite.

From September 1970 through May 1972, I attended Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Being 14 years old, and living away from home with 100 other males of the same age opened up a large opportunity to experience other people, AND MUSIC, that I never otherwise would.

Radio was still AM, dominated by the "Top 40" format, so for me, being from a small town, this wider range of people that I lived with made a difference in how my music tastes were formed.

I was reminded of some of these old favorites when writing about my classical music journey.

This is the FOURTH blog post that features the albums that were the big hits for me during those two years.
