Disturbing, and we have not learned.

Last weekend I watched "1971" which is about the "Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI." I was not familiar with this event. Granted, I was a freshman in high school in 1971.

Basically, some anti-war people broke into a 2 man FBI office in Media, PA. They were looking for proof that the FBI (they called it Feberal Bureau of Intinidation) was illegally investigating and harassing U.S. citizens. The group removed about 1000 documents.  Wikipedia has a good summary HERE.

Well, they got a whole lot more than they bargained for! The biggest surprise was discovering CONTELPRO, a secret operation the FBI had been running since 1956 against "subversive" orgaizations.

The stolen documents were released by the group to many news organizations. All but one, the Washington Post, succumbed to pressure not to print. This was in March of 1971. By June of that year, the New York Times published the "Pentagon Papers." Makes me wonder if the NYT would have published those if the Post had not scooped them on the FBI.

    This is a must-watch film.
